• COURMAYEUR: Courmayeur (1224 m above sea level) is the last town before the Mont Blanc tunnel, and can be reached directly by motorway. It is one of the most famous and most beautiful places in the Alps: a typical Valle d’Aosta village in the midst of the Mont Blanc landscape.
Travellers are greeted by the elegant pedestrian centre and picturesque little streets.
There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature in winter and summer; it is ideal for winter sports and for summer excursions and climbs.
The extraordinary ski pistes, one of the most panoramic cable cars in the Alps that crosses Mont Blanc going over the border with France and the sports centre with its large ice rink, all make Courmayeur a much sought-after destination all year round. An 18-hole golf course and the famous Pre Saint Didier spa town are only minutes away. The Saint Vincent casino is nearby, Chamonix is just over the border and the town of Aosta is only 30 minutes away by car.
• THE CABLE CAR: MONT BLANC CABLE CAR: Loc La Palud 22, Courmayeur.
Penetrating to the heart of the largest massif in the Alps offers an opportunity for everyone, whether mountaineering fans or not, to experience a high-altitude Alpine environment. From the panoramic terrace there are close-up views of the peaks of the Dente del Gigante (the Giant’s Tooth) and Mont Blanc, of the Peuterey ridge and the Himalayan-type glacial cirque of Brenva: it is an unforgettable experience. The view of Val Veny is splendid too, as is the Miage glacier. The ticket includes a visit to the exhibition of crystals which Mont Blanc is so rich in. At the intermediate stop of Pavillon du Mont Frety, the Saussurea alpine garden is well worth a visit, and a beautiful panoramic path leads up to a viewpoint over the Brenva glacier. The ticket is expensive but on a clear day the sight is well worth the cost. Don’t go up in bad weather: it would be a waste of money. It is possible to continue the crossing in panoramic cable cars as far as the Aiguille du Midi, and to descend to Chamonix, also by cable car. The view of the north side of the mountain is exceptional, but comes at an additional cost. The return journey is by bus through the Mont Blanc tunnel. www.montebianco.com
